Tide Turner Plastic Challenge 2023

Collaboration with WWF and Launch of the Tide Turner Challenge

On June 20th, 2023, Oasis, the ecology club of IISER Berhampur, hosted the "Tide Turner Plastic Challenge" in collaboration with the Tide Turner Plastic Challenge (TTPC) Youth Network and WWF. TTPC is a global youth initiative led by WWF, bringing young people together to combat plastic pollution. This online event was held during vacation time, allowing participants from various locations to join the session. This was the second year that Oasis hosted the event, continuing its focus on raising awareness about plastic pollution, particularly in marine ecosystems, and its devastating impact on the environment.

The collaboration with WWF further enhanced the credibility and reach of the event, underscoring Oasiss dedication to tackling pressing environmental issues with the support of globally recognized organizations. The event attracted a diverse group of students, faculty, and community members who were eager to learn about the challenges and solutions related to plastic waste.

Interactive and Engaging Discussions on Plastic Pollution

The event fostered an interactive learning environment, where WWF Associates led discussions on the causes and consequences of plastic pollution. Participants actively engaged in these conversations, sharing their thoughts and ideas on how plastic waste harms marine ecosystems and biodiversity. The dialogue was dynamic and informative, with students discussing the ripple effects of plastic on wildlife and ecosystems, while the WWF team provided expert insights on the global scale of the issue.

Participants also explored practical solutions, such as reducing plastic consumption, recycling, and using alternatives to single-use plastics. The discussions went beyond facts and statistics, delving into personal habits and behaviors that contribute to the plastic pollution crisis. This created a collective sense of responsibility and encouraged each participant to reflect on how they can help mitigate the issue in their everyday lives.

Post-Event Challenges and Successful Completion of the Tide Turner 2023

Following the event, the WWF team issued a series of post-event challenges, encouraging participants to take action by reducing plastic use and adopting the "Four Rs"Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. These challenges prompted Oasis members and other students to integrate sustainable practices into their daily routines.

Oasis responded by launching multiple campus-wide initiatives, including creating and displaying educational posters, starting peer-to-peer conversations about reducing plastic use, and organizing discussions on sustainability. The clubs efforts not only raised awareness but also created an ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship.

The successful completion of the Tide Turner 2023 challenge marked a significant achievement for Oasis, reinforcing their mission to promote environmental responsibility and make a lasting impact on their community. This initiative served as an important step in their goal of fostering ecological awareness at local, national, and global levels.
