Interactive Sessions and Expert Insights
The 3rd edition of the Dragonfly Festival at IISER Berhampur brought together students, researchers, and conservation enthusiasts to explore the beauty and ecological significance of dragonflies. Hosted by the Eco Club (Oasis) in collaboration with WWF-India and the Bombay Natural History Society, the festival aimed to increase awareness of these often-overlooked insects and their essential role in maintaining ecosystem balance. Through this event, participants gained insight into the diversity of dragonflies and their habitats, as well as the environmental conditions that support their thriving populations.
Dragonfly Hunts: Bringing Learning to Life
The festival featured interactive and educational sessions led by expert volunteers, each passionate about insect conservation. These sessions highlighted dragonflies contributions as natural pest controllers and bioindicatorsorganisms whose presence or absence can reveal much about environmental health. Through engaging activities and live demonstrations, participants learned about the fascinating lifecycle of dragonflies, from aquatic nymphs to skilled aerial predators, as well as the urgent need for their conservation amidst habitat loss and pollution. The knowledge shared underscored the interconnectedness of all species within an ecosystem, fostering a deeper appreciation for biodiversity.
The Dragonfly Festival 2021 concluded on an inspiring note, urging attendees to adopt conservation efforts and make them a personal mission. The event succeeded in its goal: not only did it highlight the critical role of dragonflies within ecosystems, but it also fostered a community-driven passion for their protection. By engaging students and community members in the observation and appreciation of dragonflies, the festival ignited a spark for future conservation initiatives and left participants with a newfound respect for these remarkable insects.
