Spotlight on Marine Conservation: The Issue of Ghost Nets
The Eco Club, Oasis, organized an enlightening session on the critical issue of ghost netsdiscarded fishing gear that poses a severe threat to marine life and aquatic ecosystems. These nets, often abandoned or lost in the ocean, continue to ensnare marine animals long after their intended use, disrupting habitats and contributing to significant biodiversity loss. This event aimed to educate participants on the scale of the problem and inspire them to support initiatives for removing ghost nets from the seas.
Insights from Filmmaker Akanksha Tiwari
The session featured Akanksha Tiwari, an independent wildlife filmmaker and advocate for marine conservation, known for her impactful work on oceanic threats. Tiwari, the director of Tangled Seas, Indias pioneering film on discarded fishing gear, shared her experiences from working on rescue initiatives for marine animals trapped in ghost nets. As a 2020 Jackson Wild Summit Fellow, Tiwari has collaborated on notable documentaries, including work with National Geographic, bringing a wealth of knowledge and firsthand stories to the discussion.
