A Day of Exploration and Discovery

On the 11th of January 2023, Club Oasis organized a nature walk on the IISER Berhampur campus, aimed at fostering an appreciation for the local flora and fauna. The event brought together nature enthusiasts, students, and researchers who were eager to explore the diverse ecosystems within the campus and learn more about the natural world that surrounds them. The walk focused on educating participants about the rich biodiversity present on the campus, encouraging them to connect with nature and understand the vital roles different species play in maintaining a balanced ecosystem.

Exploring Flora and Fauna

The nature walk began early in the morning, when the campus was at its most serene. Participants were guided through various habitats, including wooded areas, open fields, and along small water bodies, where they could observe the diverse plant and animal life. The walk focused on highlighting the ecological importance of the different species encountered, from native trees to shrubs, and the myriad of insects, birds, and small mammals that inhabit the area. The group stopped frequently to discuss interesting plant species, their medicinal or ecological uses, and how they contribute to the overall health of the ecosystem.

Engaging with Nature

Along the walk, participants learned how to spot various species of birds, butterflies, and insects, each playing a crucial role in pollination, pest control, and maintaining the biodiversity of the area. The walk also included discussions on the effects of habitat loss and environmental degradation on local wildlife, emphasizing the importance of conservation efforts to protect the natural environments that support these species. The members of Oasis encouraged everyone to actively participate in identifying species, using field guides and mobile apps to record their findings and document the biodiversity of the campus.

As the walk came to a close, participants gathered to reflect on their experiences. The nature walk not only provided an opportunity to witness the beauty of the local flora and fauna but also served as an educational experience, enhancing awareness about the critical role that biodiversity plays in maintaining the ecological balance. The event concluded with a renewed sense of appreciation for nature and a collective commitment to protecting and conserving the environment, with Oasis members encouraging everyone to be mindful of the ecosystems they interact with daily.
