Exploring Avian Diversity at IISER Berhampur
On the 24th of September 2023, Club Oasis organized a birding event at IISER Berhampur, inviting both club members and students from the institute to participate. The event was held at the campus and its surrounding locality, specifically focusing on the western area, which includes nearby ponds and natural habitats. The objective was to explore and document the local avian diversity while providing participants with an opportunity to observe and identify various bird species. Additionally, the event aimed to raise awareness about the ecological roles of these birds and the importance of preserving their natural habitats to maintain biodiversity.
Early Morning Walk and Birdwatching
The birding event commenced early in the morning to take advantage of the tranquil hours when bird activity is at its peak. Participants gathered near local ponds and trails, equipped with binoculars and field guides to aid in their observations. As the group moved through the campus and surrounding areas, they were able to spot a wide range of bird species, actively foraging and interacting in their natural surroundings.
Bird Species Observed
Throughout the morning, participants observed several notable species, including Brahminy Kites, Egrets, and a variety of other local birds. The group discussed the significant ecological roles of these birds, such as their contributions to pest control, seed dispersal, and maintaining the balance of the ecosystem. In addition, the birding event provided insights into the migratory patterns of certain species and the vital importance of habitat conservation to ensure the survival of these birds and other wildlife in the region.
The birding trip at IISER Berhampur was both an enriching and educational experience for all involved. It offered participants a valuable opportunity to connect with nature while highlighting the critical need to protect natural environments for the preservation of avian biodiversity. As the event concluded, participants reflected on the variety of species observed and the knowledge gained regarding bird conservation. The event ended with a shared commitment to environmental protection and a renewed understanding of the importance of preserving local ecosystems and wildlife.
