Students from IISER Berhampur recently visited the Nalabana Bird Sanctuary at Chilika Lake, an ecological hotspot renowned for its rich biodiversity. The trip offered students an incredible learning experience as they observed a wide variety of bird species in their natural habitat, studying their behaviors, interactions, and unique adaptations. Chilika Lake: A Biodiversity Treasure in Odisha
Located on the eastern coast of India, Chilika Lake is Asias largest brackish water lagoon and one of Odishas most renowned ecological sites. Spanning over 1,100 square kilometers, it is a sanctuary for a diverse array of flora and fauna. Among its many wonders is the Nalabana Bird Sanctuary, a protected zone within Chilika known for attracting thousands of migratory birds, particularly during winter. Chilikas unique ecosystem sustains a vast number of species and is a critical habitat for fish, crustaceans, and endangered birds, making it a vital natural asset in need of careful preservation.

On January 25, 2020, students from IISER Berhampur embarked on an educational journey to the Nalabana Bird Sanctuary at Chilika Lake. This area, rich in avian biodiversity, offers visitors an unparalleled glimpse into the world of migratory and resident bird species. Guided by local experts, students had the chance to see a variety of birds in their natural habitat, observing behaviors and interactions up close, which provided them with a fresh perspective on ecological complexity.
