How to do an ecologic field trip, theory

The "How to Do a Field Trip" training session, organized by Oasis, provided participants with essential skills for successful fieldwork. Led by coordinator Subrat and senior club members, the session covered key aspects of field trip preparation, including pre-trip research, route planning, and the identification of key ecological features to optimize field observation. A significant focus was placed on the importance of metadata in ecological research, introducing participants to standards like Darwin Core and Audubon Core for reliable, interoperable data collection. The session also covered the use of essential field tools such as GPS devices, mapping software, and species identification apps like PlantNet and eBird, equipping members with practical techniques to document species accurately. By combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on tools, the session prepared participants to approach fieldwork with scientific rigor, ensuring they contribute credible data to ecological research and conservation efforts.

Preparing for the Field: Understanding Pre-Trip Essentials

The theoretical training session began with a detailed focus on pre-trip planning, an essential component of successful fieldwork. Conducted by Oasis coordinator Subrat and senior club members, this session provided insights into effectively planning field excursions by developing a deep understanding of the chosen area. Participants learned about the importance of thorough pre-field research, including techniques for reading and reviewing the field environment in advance. They explored strategies such as creating maps and grids of the location, ensuring they had an accurate mental and physical layout of the field terrain before setting foot on site. With guidance, members learned how to assess key ecological features, plan routes, and identify likely spots for observing flora and fauna, thereby optimizing their time and effort on the field.

The Role of Metadata: Standards and Trust in Field Documentation

A key part of the training centered on metadata and its crucial role in ecological research and field documentation. Oasis members were introduced to the concept of metadata as the backbone of field data integrity, helping ensure that the collected information is trusted, transparent, and interoperable across scientific platforms. The session emphasized how maintaining original metadata reinforces the credibility of the findings, facilitating meaningful research contributions. Members were also introduced to standard metadata frameworks like the Darwin Core and Audubon Core, which enable consistent data collection and sharing across organizations and research studies. These frameworks enhance data interoperability, making it easier for field researchers to collaborate on global projects. By aligning with these standards, students were equipped with skills to generate valuable, standardized data that could be easily accessed and utilized by researchers worldwide.

Field Tools and Techniques: GPS, Mapping, and Species Identification

The session concluded with an introduction to the essential tools and techniques required for fieldwork. The members received an overview of using GPS devices, compasses, and digital tools to map and navigate field sites accurately. They explored apps such as PlantNet (for plant identification), FieldMove Clino (for geological mapping and structural data), eBird (for bird sighting records), and Merlin (for bird species identification), which provide reliable assistance in species documentation and mapping. In addition to technical skills, members learned best practices for locating, placing, and mapping various species. This segment equipped them with practical know-how on using technology to enhance the fieldwork experience, with each apps unique features aiding them in identifying and recording species with precision.
