Birding Trip At Campus Locality
Birding trip at Campus Locality
Wednesday, 15 February, 2023
At 5:30 a.m., a flock of birds with a broad composition of species and age groups was noticed 1 km distant from the institute, in the land where a correctly balanced ecosystem of plants, birds, and water harmonises ecology. A pond built and maintained by the locals drew attention, where the birds were nurtured, their lives were examined, and their feeding patterns were studied.
Dr. Bodhisatta Nandi, an experienced researcher in the field of organism behaviour, led the walk and provided a very scientific approach to nature's creation.

Early Morning Birding Expedition
On February 15, 2023, Oasis organized a birding trip in the local environs of IISER Berhampur. The event commenced at 5:30 a.m., with participants gathering near a location 1 km from the institute, renowned for its balanced ecosystem that supports diverse avian life. The area, highlighted by a locally maintained pond, has become a crucial habitat where various bird species thrive in synchrony with native flora and water sources.
Observations and Ecological Insights
Led by Dr. Bodhisatta Nandi, an expert in organismal behavior, participants engaged in a scientific exploration of avian ecology. Dr. Nandi's insights shed light on the behavioral patterns, feeding habits, and habitat interactions of the bird species encountered. The group carefully observed how these birds contribute to the area's biodiversity, underscoring the importance of conserving small ecosystems to maintain ecological harmony.
Species Diversity and Noteworthy Sightings
During this immersive experience, participants identified several bird species that represent a range of ecological niches and adaptive strategies. Notable sightings included the cattle egret, Brahminy kite, black kite, rose-ringed parakeet, small egret, kingfisher, and Indian gray hornbill.
- Cattle Egret & Small Egret: Known for their symbiotic relationships with grazing animals and wetland dependency, these species reflect a close association with the ponds environment.
- Raptors (Brahminy Kite & Black Kite): As scavengers and predators, these kites play a pivotal role in controlling the small animal population and contribute to the ecological balance.
- Indian Gray Hornbill & Rose-ringed Parakeet: Primarily frugivores, these birds help with seed dispersal, supporting the regeneration of the local flora.
- Kingfisher: This birds preference for aquatic prey showcases its role as an indicator of water health in the habitat.
The birding trip provided a unique opportunity to witness the interconnectedness of species and emphasized the need for ongoing observation and preservation of such natural habitats.
