Understanding Migratory Birds

Honoring World Migratory Bird Day

On May 13 and 14, at the break of dawn, when the environment was peaceful and silent, a variety of flocks of birds flew brilliantly over the skies. While journeying, a variety of species, including the egret, parrot, and kingfisher, drew the attention of students who were looking to study the migration cycle of birds on this World Migratory Bird Day. Moving through the surrounding flora, we came across two lakes maintained by the people to serve their livelihood, where we witnessed the feeding behavior of birds. This bird now has a place to feed thanks to human interference. We can spot countless instances of birds of various sizes roaming the skies as we move, some coming from far away and some belonging to here only.

Honoring World Migratory Bird Day

Morning Observations and Migratory Patterns

World Migratory Bird Day, celebrated in May and October each year, raises awareness about the importance of migratory bird conservation and the preservation of their habitats. It reminds us of the incredible journeys these species undertake annually and the challenges they face. This global initiative encourages collective action to support bird populations and protect the diverse ecosystems that sustain them.

Exploring Habitat and Feeding Sites

On May 13 and 14, 2023, Oasis members gathered at dawn to witness the wonders of bird migration in celebration of World Migratory Bird Day. The calm morning provided an ideal setting as the group observed flocks of birds soaring gracefully across the sky, many undertaking long migratory journeys while others were local residents. The peaceful ambiance allowed participants to connect deeply with the rhythm of nature and appreciate the complexities of avian migration cycles.

Notable Bird Species and Conservation Insights

During the exploration, participants visited two lakes near the campus, maintained by the local community for both ecological and economic purposes. These lakes, essential for regional biodiversity, also serve as feeding grounds for migratory birds. Observing the feeding behaviors of egrets, parrots, and kingfishers, participants noted how human intervention in maintaining these lakes supports the birds' survival during migration seasons.

The diversity of bird species observed during the event illustrated the wide array of migratory and resident species in the area. Each species played a unique role in the ecosystem, showcasing the need for habitat preservation.
